Tomorrow is the first day of Fan Expo 2009! This is a big year for Expo as they celebrate their 15th anniversary. You can check the official website for full details, but as a quick overview, here's some of the guests they've lined up for this year:

Walter asked us to post this on his behalf, because he has no hands. He's a wedge after all. Anyway, he bought some satellite laser box or something and is jumping up and down about it. Here y'go.

WALTER TALKS GPS MODDING

A week or two ago I was in the local Wedgeland Canadian Tire (yes, they have Canadian Tire in Wedgeland) and saw a GPS for $49.99. I thought this was neat, because I like shiny things with buttons. Turns out several other people like cheap neat things, too, as evidenced in this thread on Red Flag Deals. The GPS has old map data and a clumsy interface, but isn't too shabby as far as hardware is concerned: 372MHz ARM processor, 64MB ram, 2GB built-in flash with an SD-slot. Not bad for $49!

Very quickly, some smart kids found that this GPS was very easy to hack. Within minutes, by changing a single line in a text Editor, you can get to a Windows CE (Core 5.0, bleh) shell and start installing other stuff. Neat!

I won't go into detail on how to hack the unit, it's been covered in the aforementioned thread, and summarized in a recently created wiki. Stick to the Wiki, at 2700+ posts, the Red Flag Deals thread's signal to noise ratio is a bit low.

The first thing I did was to install BBMenu, an alternative menu system to replace the clunky Curtis software. It comes with a bunch of stuff like:

- Core Player, for playing divx and other video formats
- An EBook Reader
- An MP3 Player
- A bunch of games (Sudoku, guys, SUDOKU)
- Shortcuts to the Windows CE command/line

Also, it kind of makes the UI look like an iPhone. Is that still cool? I'm new, it's still cool to me. And for those who want to try out alternative GPS software, it has icons ready to be pointed at Tomtom, Garmin, and iGo navigation software, all of which reportedly work on the GPD359. Just remember to buy legitimate copies, kids! BBMenu installation help is on the wiki as well.

What I'm working on right now is getting some more intense gaming action out of this thing. I'd like to get a NES or SNES emulator running, ultimately. My old first generation Compaq iPaq (Pocket PC) could run a NES emulator, and this has twice as much RAM as it did. But, I thought, before trying that out I should go for something a little less intensive. I thought ScummVM would be a good choice as it's been ported to EVERYTHING. Here's a brief walkthrough on the steps to get it running on your GPD359:

0) "Unlock" your GPD359 following the instructions on the aforementioned wiki.

1) Download ScummVM for Windows CE: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/scummvm/scummvm-0.13.0-WinCE.zip?download

2) Unpack and copy the ScummVM folder to somewhere on the GPS (/ResidentFlash/ScummVM/ or /SDMMC/ScummVM/) are good bets. ScummVM will fit in the resident flash memory but you may max it out if you install more than a couple games. You must have Windows Mobile Device Center installed to copy to your device, but you already installed it as part of the instructions to unlock your device, right? If you have a separate SD card reader, by all means use it instead. ActiveSync is dog slow (assuming a relatively slow dog, where a dedicated card reader would be a middle-of-the-road Greyhound).

3) Download GAPI. GAPIS is the "Game API" library, written by Microsoft and subsequently abandoned. Some nice, probably European people have written a free clone (Save this somewhere on your PC): http://www.wincesoft.de/GAPI_for_HPCs_v403_with_Apps.CAB

4) .CAB files are the Windows CE equivalent of .MSI installer files on Windows XP/Vista. Using Windows Mobile Device Center (aka. ActiveSync), copy the file anywhere your devices (ResidentFlash/ or SDMMC/, perhaps).

5) Load Windows Explorer on the GPS (if using BBMenu, there is an icon to load Windows in the apps subscreen). Find the .CAB file on your device and double-click it. It will install GAPI and the .CAB file will magically disappear. Don't despair!

6) With GAPI installed, you need set it to emulation mode. Unfortunately, no native GAPI configuration [yet] exists for the GPD359. In Windows Explorer on the GPS, click your way to \Windows\ and find the GAPI executable. Double-click it to load the options dialog.

7) Select the 'Emulator' tab, check "Use GAPI emulator'. Ensure Emulated Display size set to 320 x 240 (Native).

8) Go back to the ScummVM folder you copied over to the GPS earlier and click ScummVM1 or ScummVM2 (older games use ScummVM1, newer ones ScummVM2). You may need to go through the GAPI dialog once more, after which, you're presented with the ScummVM main menu!

So here's the rub. I can't yet figure out how to make the GAPI installation "stick". Every time the device is shut off, everything non-stock (including GAPI) is purged from the \Windows\ folder on the internal flash memory. Anyone gotten around that? Please post in the comments!

Other than that hitch, it's Scumm time! I'm off to play some Maniac Mansion. Or Monkey Island. Ooh, or Kings Quest 5! Did you know all the old Sierra games run on ScummVM? Amazing!!

Next task: Get PocketNES or similar running and beat Final Fantasy with 4 white mages. It has happened before and it will happen again!

PS: RIP Battlestar. My sadness is tempered only by GPS fiddling.

So what mating rituals do Wedges follow? How does a wedge choose its valentine?

Some would say they are polar opposites, especially since Walter is very, very, tall, and Brie is very, very petite!

I want to start by saying that in typing my subject heading I was reminded of a guy who told me that he wasn’t that into his girl and that he planned to dump her before Vday so that he wouldn’t have to give her anything… Hmmm actually come to think of it maybe he did give her something after all.

Valentines Day. I think my best valentine was my mom who would sneak little cinnamon hearts into my lunch as a kid. The fiery red that burned at my throat and stained my tongue was like a warm hug.

Now because I don’t have a particularly bad V-day to write about, which kind of feels like a lost pastime, or a particularly amazing one… I will tell the tale of two wedges in LOOOVE. The added o’s are meant to indicate the icky-ness level.

As you maybe know Rochero owns both gwen and beck. One morning she went to Gwen’s cage in hopes of getting her out and BLAMO she was gone!!! Rochero went to becks cage…she peeled back the blanket to reveal two very guilty looking wedges. 35 days later and BABIES!!!!! I guess this is maybe about love cause Gwen loved the whole ordeal enough to pull the same stunt 1 year later.

‘Love is blind,’ and it’s a good thing too.

So it is almost February…which I am deeming the month of love. After which you can go back to resenting your significant other, or to being extremely alone and cynical. Anyway this blog is going to have a theme…can you guess it… if you thought ‘superior intelligence’ and ‘witty charming goodness’ you were right by default but no. Anyway I am going to throw a wrench in the system by saying that Feb 14 is no longer Valentines day…and because of the “witty charming goodness’ bit you buy it.

So it’s what Jan 29… and I say bring on the love!

ANIMAL OF THE WEEK!!!!

it is time for what I like to call ‘ANIMAL of THE WEEK’. Actually I don’t much like calling it that. Seriously typing it out was like torture.

Okay so this weeks’ featured animal is the hedgehog. Or, in Wedgeland, the wedgehog. By the way just because this segment is called animal of the week doesn’t mean that I will necessarily commit to the idea. This may just be animal of the hour. A scientific fling as it were, with the topic of one animal in particular on one particular day. Who knows I might never blog about another darn animal again.

Animal of the Week: African Pygmy Hedgehog

Common name: hedgehog

Pronunciation in Wedgelish: Wej-hog

Translation/Origin of the Name:
HEDGE: because in cartoons and children’s books that is where they hang out.
OR
WEDGE: because of their shape,
HOG: when translated means one who uses too much of something. Both wedge and hedgehogs alike have been known to use excessive amounts of cuteness in order to get their way. Sneaky buggers!

Likes:
A) Wheeling- In the great plains of Africa and perhaps in parts of England bucket wheels grow in the wild. Hedge and wedgehogs use these exotic plants for daily exercise, which explains why the domesticated hedge or wedgehog is so keen on running on these things.

B) Food. Mealworms, crickets, turkey, chicken, veggies, baby food, high quality cat foods, 3 course gourmet meals – these are all things native to the hedge and wedgehog and so they must be included in the diet of a domesticated hedge/wedgehog too.
C) The Moon- Hedgehogs are nocturnal for the simple fact that they are also Pagans. They worship the moon as their god.

Dislikes: The cold- therefore domesticated hedge/wedgehogs hate Canada for ¾ of the year . Then again so do most Canadians. They like their homes to be at least 72 degrees which for you Americans is a fairly big number in Fahrenheit.

Myths: that they can collect coins and defeat evil doer mad scientist doctor types. Also if they are in a ball and rolling down a hill etc. it is probably because they tripped. This is not how they get around.

Etsy Bloggers Blog Carnival: New Years Resolutions

So I wanted to help by giving you all a list of new years resolutions but then I figured that for a girl who can’t even take the energy to come up with one resolution coming up with a list would just be a whole lot of effort. So I did the next best thing and googled new years resolutions and didn’t I come up with the top ten. Besides it is so much better to break someone elses resolution than it is to break your own. So here we go:

1. Spend More Time with Family (Yes this includes your Wedges Family members too!)
Unless of course you already spend too much time with family. Like if your mom still folds your laundry and your dad cuts your sandwiches into triangles for you, then perhaps your should resolve to spend less time with family and I don’t care if your 5!

2. Fit in Fitness (Stay tuned for future Wedges workout video!)
Or just start calling the every day things that you do fitness. Like instead of getting food from the fridge, you are now going on a walk that just coincidentally ends at the fridge and with you stuffing your face with twinkies and a sandwich that your dad cut into triangles for you.

3. Tame the Bulge
Not really sure why this is separate from the fitness one unless this one involves like a cape and whip maybe. Like my stomach rolls use to be ferocious now they are only passive aggressive. I don’t get it.

4. Quit Smoking
If you don’t smoke, start, then next year you can resolve to stop.

5. Enjoy Life More
Or have less expectations for what enjoyment is. Like say enjoyment is now about getting a parking ticket because your car went 5 minutes over the meter which might have had something to do with the man in line in front of you at the supermarket who apparently hadn’t been told that debit cards and dollar bills have been invented and insisted on paying for his purchases with pennies and nickels. Now look how happy you are to find that you owe the city another 30 dollars. Yay!

6. Quit Drinking
Remember there is no point in quitting drinking if you don’t make a good go of doing it in the first place. Binge for a while, then quit. People will be much more impressed that way.

7. Get Out of Debt (So you can adopt more wedges!)
Rob a bank. Be sure to wear one of the black outfits that your mom has pressed and folded for you. Next year resolve not to steal.

8. Learn Something New
OR find a new way of looking at something old that you already knew.

9. Help Others
Especially if helping others will benefit you. Don’t be a sucker about it. And doing something out of the goodness of your heart is just a way to make the rest of us feel bad.

10. Get Organized
Or at least become really skilled and defending your disorganization.

Ever seen a guy or girl or guy/girl and thought “damn that person is so delicious I just want to eat them up!”??? Assuming of course that you meant that metaphorically –we don’t really warrant cannibalism there’s just too much legal red tape , though we hear that ppl taste like chicken…who knew? Anyway the point is that chances are the person who warranted your metaphorical cannibalistic tendencies was quite possibly a user of Spotted Cows products. Delicious soaps, and bath fizzes –make good hygiene a tasteful affair. I mean there’s even a whipped gingerbread scrub! So head over to the spotted cow and order some products for your loved ones. Heck get some for yourself. I mean should the situation arise where you do in fact need to be eaten wouldn’t you want to at least taste good. Would you rather be remembered as the person who tasted like sweet sweet gingerbread or raw chicken flesh?

Things to Do…With Your Wedge

1. Go to prom. Because wedges don’t have hands you wont have to worry about being groped on the dance floor. Nice! Note this doesn’t apply to Squido or Octo!
2. Fill the wedge shaped void of loneliness in your life.
3. For non sea creature wedges- challenge them to an arm wrestle. You’ll win every time I promise.
4. Use them to role play scenarios in your life that you wish would happen. Then imagine that they actually have.
5. Photo shoot! Wedges are very photogenic and rarely –by which I mean never- get caught with their eyes closed.
6. Fulfill your maternal or paternal instincts with something that wont require a trust fund and wont continually put the clearly empty carton of milk back in the fridge!
7. Fashion yourself a new identity as the crazy lady with the cats except you may or may not be a lady and instead of cats you will have lots and lots of wedges. Work your new identity. Shout at small children, and the elderly and reek havoc on anyone who comes near you and your wedge haven!
8. Nothing. Hear me out- nothing done without your wedge is literally nothing. Nothing done with your wedge is something. Which is better than nothing.

Tip #3 Play Over-Under the game that keeps you slim!
Either over or under prepare each dish. Nothing stops up a craving like frozen turkey and melted ice-cream. Make it fun where guests compete in a round robin style tournament where they guess at whether the dish is under-and likely to give them salmonella poisoning etc. or over- and likely to cook their insides, prepared. Winner takes all!

Whatever. The only thing that needs to be trim this holiday is the tree. Now grab yourself a box of chocolate, a jug of eggnog, and some ornaments and get trimming!

Holiday Recipe- Protein Alternative for the Vegetarian

Festive Tabouli

1 box of Tabouli
1cup mushrooms cremini (can also mix in Shiitake)
½ cup cranberries (either dried or canned)
1cup sliced almonds (and or pecans)
1tbl spoon oil

Prepare one box of Tabouli as per directions and set aside.
In a frying pan over medium heat combine oil, mushrooms, and nuts. Cook until nuts are golden and mushrooms are tender. Then stir ingredients along with cranberries into the Tabouli. You may also wish to use the above as ingredients to stuff peppers with. In which case cut your pepper in half length ways. Scoop out any seeds. Fill with the mixture. Top with grated cheese. Or sprinkle with parmesan. Then bake in the oven at 350 degrees until the pepper is tender and the cheese melted.

So it is a little known fact that geometry is pretty much the devil, but without all the fire, and perish and toil bit. Still there is one geometric shape that dominates them all. Can you guess it? If you said wedge well congratulations you get a symbolic and otherwise meaningless gold star. Enjoy. If you said something else you will read the following entry over and over again until you have adopted my opinion, which in this instance is the right one. If you are in disagreement with me that is because of the simple fact that you are wrong.

Ok so….
Most roofs are what… wedge shaped. Because circle roofs would be pools, and octagon roofs would look dumb. Round one to wedges.

Take a circle or cylinder cake… what do you do with it. You cut it…into wedges. So circles are just wedges waiting to happen. Round two to wedges.

1.The wedge of cheese. So good on crackers. So good on sandwiches. So good on other cheese. **If you are vegan, lactose intolerant or suffer from an ailment that makes you deathly afraid or adverse to eating cheese (cheese-a-phobic?) then read as “the wedge of soy cheese”. Because cheese made from beans is far less frightening. Seriously though Soy Cheese Rules! Time to find out if there really is such thing as a cheese phobia. There is it is called Turophobia. Okay final comment on phobias. The word for the phobia of long words is : Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Seriously! So ppl with this phobia can’t get help for it because they wouldn't be able to tell ppl about it.

2. Wedge shoes. Thank you 1930’s now we youthful petite femme can look like gangly legged children on stilts. Yes that is a really really good thing.

3. The wedgie. The wedgie is like a board game without the board or pieces. The wedgie is like a sport without the expensive equipment and camaraderie. The wedgie is like a high five without the jovial shared intimacy. I mean it’s intimate alright. The wedgie crosses economic barriers. Because all you need is one other person weaker than yourself who happens to be clad in, at the very least, a pair of knickers and you’ve got yourself at least a few minutes of fun! Not to mention an opportunity for social dominance and countless future memories to look back on with nostalgia. Nothing like the first time you hear the cracking rip of a seam of underwear pulled to its’ limit. {Warning: in no way is wearewedges.com responsible for any botched wedgie attempts. When trying to execute wedgies it is key to be sure that the target is in fact wearing underwear. Failure to know this with any certainty can result in awkward encounters, and heightened embarrassment.}

4. The atomic wedgie. See #3 but up the anti, add an extra does of dominance, and a whole new layer of humiliation. Oh and fun.

5. The wedge. Because doors wont hold themselves open.

6. The wedge Transformer. Formers in disguise!

7. Geometric Wedge: actually never mind that’s not a good one. Curse you geometric wedge and your ½ base times height equation that paved the way for sunny days spent in summer school.

When a wedge becomes adopted into a new household, you must wedgeproof your environment and have plenty of toys for your new Wedges to play with! Depending on the wedge, you will need different toys! For instance Brie needs fashion related toys...Walter needs a drum set and other music related toys...the smittens would love pipe cleaners and mice...wedgehogs definitaly need tinkly balls and running wheels...and sea wedges can't live without water toys!

However, all Wedges like sparkly colourful beads! This is why I must introduce you to BFBEADS - Baby Friendly Beads. Just like babies, wedges need stimulation and something to distract them, especially when

The Wedge Studio is haunted. For real....

I think the We Are Wedges studio is haunted. I don't have any proof of this, but I think it's true all the same.

Often, I'm working late into the night, designing and sewing Wedges to send all over the world. For the longest time, I thought I was hearing things. Scratching noises. Creaking. At first, I assumed the cats had just gotten into the studio again. They can be pretty devious. But one night, I was getting some fabric out of the closet, and things got a bit weird.

One of the closets in the studio is under a staircase that leads up to the ground level floor. The closet door is directly below the top of the staircase above, so the closet ceiling gets lower and lower the further back you go in the closet. I was rooting around in there, looking for the purple velvet for some new Octos, and I heard the stairs creaking.

But I was the only one in the studio.

I kind of freaked out a little bit, and needless to say I was done Wedging for the evening. Over the next few weeks, I calmed down a bit, and had written off the incident as a result of too much late night coffee (I've since cut back a bit). But, a few weeks later, I was working late again, this time the closet door was closed. And I heard the scratching again. Like fingernails on a chalkboard. Coming from the closet. I fled the room without opening the closet and it was several hours before I went back to the work at night.

A few weeks later, I was speaking to an elderly lady who lives in the same building as the We Are Wedges studio. She had been in the building for years, long before I arrived. She asked what unit I was in, and when I told her, her face went white, and she broke of the conversation politely and quickly walked (hobbled) away.

What's up with my studio?

I decided to do some detective work, and spoke to a few of my other neighbours I hadn't yet met. I ran into a man a few doors down at the mailbox and asked him if he knew anything about the tenants in my unit. He responded that as far as he knew the unit was vacant. He said it had been vacant til that boy died, and it would probably be vacant for quite some time.

!!!!!!!!!

Trying to retain my composure, I asked what boy he was talking about. He told me that the former tenants had a boy that they couldn't or wouldn't take care of, and they had been locking him in the basement closet, under the staircase, as punishment. The details are fuzzy from there, but the end of the story is that the parents went to jail, the boy is no longer with us, and I'm the new tenant.

This is a bit too weird to believe. But then again, I've always wondered why there was a latch lock on the outside of the closet door when I moved in here...

Every year, hundreds of Wedges are homeless, living on foster store shelves and stacked on shelves in the We Are Wedges Design Studio. They want nothing more than a nurturing environment and a loving family. Many of you have taken initiative and rescued a Wedge in need, and we sincerely thank you for your support. But there is much work to be done. Many more Wedges are looking for homes.

That's why, this weekend, we are proud to launch the We Are Wedges Online Adoption Center.

Just think: For the cost of a coffee a day for one month, you too can save a Wedge in need. And we're talking real budget coffee here. If you drink extra-large 172 degree half-sweet no-foam soy frappamochas, you're looking at under a week.

Wedges - Missing in action for TIFF

So Wedges have been missing in action for a bit as I worked and participated in TIFF - The Toronto International Film Festival.

TIFF is a publicly-attended film festival organized by the Toronto International Film Festival Group. It is held each September in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Showcasing over 300 films from all over the world. Every year it begins on the Thursday night after Labour Day and lasts for ten days. Film screenings take place at many venues such as the AMC @ Toronto Life Square across from Dundas Square, Roy Thomson Hall, The VISA Screening room @ the Elgin Theatre, The Winter Garden Theatre, Ryerson, Scotiabank Theatre, EzabelBader Theatre, Cumberland, Jackman Hall - AGO, ROM - Royal Ontario Museum, Varsity, 5th Element, Sutton Place Hotel, and the Al Green Theatre. Now in its 31st year, it is widely recognized as the most important film festival after Cannes and the most successful public film festival in the world.

Working for TIFF, I got to meet and work with some of the best people I have ever worked with as well as see a few movies such as...

DMC - Detroit Metal City

Embodying Japanime charm, this film is about a farm boy following his dream of becoming a swedish pop singer, only to be sucked into the dark world of death metal and then learning that his fate is to follow his own advice of " No Music, No Dream".

Fan Expo 2008 Photos

Wow! Who's this girl? She's pretty hot! Is she wearing any pants? I guess we'll never know. UNLESS YOU GO TO FANEXPO AND FIND OUT, THAT IS. $35 for a picture, though? $25 for an autograph? Man, I went to a Star Trek convention in grade 7 and Marina Sirtis signed autographs for free. She danced around the stage at the beginning and posed provocatively, too. And I got free instructions on how to build my very own tri-corder! What does this girl have on Counselor Troi? Well, the no-pants thing, I guess. But that's not even guaranteed.

Countdown to Fan Expo 2008 - DAY 2

Introducing Octo! Octo is a Sea Wedge. He works at a stop sign factory at the bottom of the ocean. He takes a great deal of pride in his work and has completed several certification courses above and beyond his regular workload. He is trained in the use of precision laser cutting devices. He's big on lasers in general. One of Octo's life goals is to have lasers mounted on his tentacles and to become a crime fighting ninja octopus. A Ninjoctopos.

Octo has either 8 arms, or 6 arms and two legs, depending on who you ask. At any rate, Octo tends to favour his 4th arm for table tennis (4th and 6th when playing pairs solo) but he's generally quite ambidextrous.

Did you know that Octopuses are ridiculously intelligent? They can open jars and escape from any aquarium that is not locked down like Fort Knox. There have been reports at zoos of Octopuses that have escaped from their aquariums, slurped across the floor to their feeder aquarium, and gorged themselves on fish. If that wasn't enough, they then knew enough to break back in to their own tank to avoid getting into trouble. This blows my mind and makes me want an Octopus as a pet, except that that is the worst idea I have ever had.

A few days ago, we introduced Squido the librarian. Today we're proud to introduce Sluggo, a sea snail who lives at the bottom of the Wedge Sea. Sluggo is a window cleaner, but has been unemployed for several months. We're all for skilled trades, but he may have wanted to consider that there are very few windows to clean at the bottom of the ocean.

Sea snails are gastropods. We were going to steal a general overview of the class from wikipedia, but the following really jumped out at us, so we're going to focus on it:

"Snails are distinguished by torsion, a process where the visceral mass of the animal rotates 180º to one side during development, such that the anus is situated more or less above the head".

Wait a minute, what was that last part? They have butts on top of your heads? Headbutts? Needless to say, our Wedge tribute to all things gastropod is not entirely anatomically correct. No headbutts. Countdown to Fan Expo 2008 - DAY 5

BRENT SPINER IS HUGE IN JAPAN. This makes a lot of sense, in that lots of things you wouldn't think are huge in Japan, in fact, are.

The photo is of our friend Data on a Japanese interview in 1995. It's from a Japanese fan site that has more pictures of Brent Spiner than I have ever seen. Seriously, check it out. It's pretty fantastic.

As we've mentioned several times now, Mr. Spiner is going to be at Fan Expo. If we can manage to sneak away from our home in BOOTH A71, we will attempt to get a picture of Brent with Miko and Mantari. I can hear it now, in the inquisitive Data voice: "Curious."

We Are Wedges were big Star Trek TNG geeks. We even read the books. We read The Boogeymen. Of course we read Imzadi. We even read Vendetta (The Giant Novel!) Somewhere in our parent's attic, we have a big plastic 1701-D with the 4 built in noises (photon torpedoes, phasers, impulse drone, and warp drive spinup!)

Countdown to Fan Expo 2008 - DAY 6

With just 6 days to FanExpo 2008, it's time to start rolling out some new Wedges! Over the next several days you'll get to know the new members of the Wedge family, Squido, Sluggo, and Octo!

Squido is librarian at the bottom of the Wedge sea. She spends her days sorting her books and lobbying for much needed public funding for expansion of the oceanic wedge libraries. She is very efficient and is an effective public speaker.

Squido made us promise to give you a refresher course on the Dewey decimal system, so here goes. Melvil Dewey invented the Dewey system in 1876 (pff, not even as old as Canada). It's comprised of 10 main categories, which are further subdivided to narrow down your search for books on a specific topic. The top-level categories are:

000 – Computer Science, information, and general works
100 – Philosophy and psychology
200 – Religion
300 – Social Sciences
400 – Languages
500 – Science and Mathematics
600 – Technology and Applied science
700 – Arts and recreation
800 – Literature
900 – History, geography, and biography

Personally, our library is 99.4% science fiction fantasy, so we're a bit heavy on section 813. And hey, if Dewey isn't your thing, Squido understands. Maybe you're more for the Library of Congress classification system, or maybe Universal Decimal Classification system? The fun never ends!

Countdown to FAN EXPO 2008 - DAY 7

The countdown begins to We Are Wedges at Fan Expo 2008!

You will find us at Booth A71 (Under House of Hsueh on the floorplan map). Repeat the mantra: Booth A71!!

Just when we thought things couldn't get any better, they add a World of Warcraft masquerade! Mind = blown. Think about it! Hundreds of people dressed up like orcs, pretending to chop wood and mine gold. We at the Wedgequarters never made it past Warcraft 2, but we're still pretty psyched.

There's going to be a pile of other WoW stuff going on, but we can't make much sense of it. Dan "sPoh" Street will be there, and he's going to "outline numerous tips and tricks for PvP, including comp selection, advanced arena positioning, and preparation for LAN play". Thanks Dan, sounds awesome!

It's a World of Warcraft SUV, complete with airbrushed elf-girls and dragons! It's amazing. We're amazed.

Let me tell you a bit about Fan Expo. Let's say you want to attend AnimeCon (who doesn't), and you really need to get that limited edition Cowboy Bebop box set. But it's the same day as HorrorCon. If you don't get Wes Craven's autograph you're going to explode, right?

Wait a minute, ComicCon's on the same day? Are you serious? And ScifiCon? And Gaming Expo! What the munch?!!?

Don't worry, guy it's just FanExpo. It's the culmination of all geek gatherings and it's at the Metro Toronto Convention Center, August 22-24, 2008. It's pretty much the most awesome. Buzz Aldrin is going to be there. Guy went to space! He and Edward James Olmos are going to have a boxing match*! You can find out way more than you need to know at the FanExpo website.

But forget about them for a minute, and think about this! We Are Wedges has secured a table in the Indy/Artist alley at Fan Expo. We're not sure what we have to do with race cars, but whatever. You can come meet the Fonz, punch Lex Luther in the face, and fill all your wedge-related needs, in the same weekend!

Stay tuned for information on where to find us in the maze of exhibitors. We'll have some incredibly short-run special show-only items for sale (think big), and the new sea wedges, Octo, Squido, and Sluggo, will be available as well.

* Oh, and by boxing match, we mean, they'll be in the same building at the same time. They could conceivably get in a fight though. I'd be in the mood for a fight if Earth turned out to be a barren radioactive wasteland, too.

Did you know that British Columbia is home to Wedge Mountain? Neither did we, so we went a team of correspondents out to take a look (hi guys!). Turns out we could have just checked Wikipedia, but any excuse for a trip to the Rockies, right?

When it comes to having a green thumb...we are late bloomers...if we ever get anything to sprout, let alone bloom!!!!

Each spring we have grandiose dreams of growing our own vegetables for the summer and each spring the squirrels and raccoons shatter our dreams until this year!

Who would have known that potatoes are hardy and can withstand being dug up several times!

Oh, hi guys, I'm just chillin' by the recycling bins over here. Just checkin' out my belly. My owners? Oh, they're just hangin' out inside right now, they told me to stay here and guard their favourite Ikea LACK table. They said it was really important to them, and I should stay out here even if it starts raining, and if anyone comes along with a giant truck and tries to steal it, I should get in the truck too and follow the thieves. I'm sure it really means a lot to them especially since it's a discontinued colour, making it pretty collectible.

MILLIONS OF OUR STUFFED FRIENDS SEE THIS SAME HORRIFIC FATE EVERY YEAR, AND THE NUMBER IS GROWING.

Or shrinking. We're not really sure. But we thought it was a good picture. Look at him, he's so sad!

Walter Talks UHF Reception

Walter gets excited about things with wires and dials and whatnot. He asked me to post this about some antenna he's building. This post has otherwise nothing to do with Wedges, except that Walter is behind it. Anyway, here goes.

Back in the 1950s, a guy named Hoverman designed an antenna. There's one pictured to the left. People used to use antennas to receive television signals before we all decided it was a good idea to pay large corporations with poor customer service to deliver more, but not necessarily better, television to us for a monthly fee.

At any rate, Hoverman's design wasn't bad, but antennas just weren't that popular anymore, and most people eventually took them down and fed them to squirrels or what have you.

Then, a few years ago, the US government decided that it would be a cool idea if everyone bought a new television even if they didn't really want or need one. They did this by mandating that all television signals be delivered digitally by the year something or other. The television networks have gone along with it, and now a whole bunch of crystal clear digital television channels are floating around in space in front of you. Some of these channels are even in high definition.

Here's the part that Walter's really excited about. The same antennas from the 50s can be used to pick up these digital channels. And some guys on the internet took Hoverman's old design and ran it through some magic computer programs and improved it a whole bunch. Then they released the plans under a GPL3 license, which is a very geeky way of saying you can use it without paying them anything. You can make your own out of wire and a 2x4! Here's the plans!

It just so happens that Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is well suited for picking up television signals from both Canadian stations broadcasting from the CN Tower, and American stations broadcasting from across Lake Ontario in Rochester, New York. It's all "very ham radio".

What were we talking about? Oh, right, trees! We are Wedges will be at the Leslieville Tree Festival! Last year was great. Local politicians made appearances and assured us that they appreciate trees (maybe the meant gallows?) Forest City Lovers played and they were awesome as usual. Maybe they'll come back and have more tambourines destroyed by overzealous crowd members. Half naked people hung from ribbons in trees (family friendly, don't worry). A unicycling stuntman juggled knives with varying degrees of success. Come say hi!

Blog Carnival Tutorial: How to Make Wedge Treats

So you adopted a Wedge and now you wonder what you should feed your wedge!

Wedges like treats! Lots of treats! but not just any treats!!!

Wedges like Tahini Cookies (or any nut butter cookies)

To satisfy your wedges cravings, here is how to make these delicious and wedge satisfying Tahini Cookies.

What you need:

1 cup tahini (can be replaced with peanut butter and any other nut butter)
3/4 cup cane sugar (brown or really any sugar)
1 large egg
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup black or white, or both sesame seeds (optional, as this is for decoration)

How to:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
Mix all the ingredients together well.
Dampen your hands with water to prevent sticking, and roll tablespoons of dough into balls.
Roll each dough ball in the sesame seeds (this is optional)
Place balls 2 inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet
Flatten balls slightly, perhaps with a fork, or hands. (At this time, if you did not roll your dough balls in the sesame seeds, you can sprinkle a few on top)
Bake the cookies until golden on bottom but still soft in the center. This will take about 12 minutes give or take, depending on your oven. (For convection ovens, try 10 minutes)
Let it cool for 5 minutes.
Feed to Wedges (Or yourself)

East End Nights

East End Nights had it's first party last night, and the Wedges were there! A new monthly music series, East End Nights is a new monthly(?) music series in Scarborough. The show took place at a venue called Rockgarden, a rather strange venue in the back of a semi-derelict recording studio near the Coffee Time corporate headquarters. Awesome!

Scarborough! We support this! Music events in the 'burbs are hard to come by, and they sure beat going to the Rain Forest Cafe, again. Turnout was quite good, we hope to see more of these nights in the future!

Well, we did some research, and apparently, the format of a haiku depends on what language you would like to write it in. We’re going to keep it simple here and leave it at “poems consisting of 3 lines, the first containing 5 syllables, second line 7 syllables, and last line 5 syllables.

OK, SURE. WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH WEDGES?

Wedgehogs...and in memory of Gwen

The Wedges family is always growing, and today, we happily introduce two new members, Gwen and Beck, the wedgehogs:

Wedgehogs have spiky backs and fuzzy tummies, but in Beck and Gwen's case, even their spikes are pretty soft. They tend to keep to themselves, but Miko and Mantari attempt to play with them whenever they can.

Gwen is an extra-special albino wedgehog, complete with laser eyes (eyes do not actually shoot lasers). Diversity is valued in Wedgeland!

On a special note, this post is in memory of another Gwen, the wedgehogs namesake. Sadly, the ever adventurous Gwen the albino hedgehog passed away this past night of April 17th, 2008. She was the mother of 2 sets of babies, 7 in total, and was much loved by her family.

This is not a goodbye to Gwen, as she will live on, preserved in Wedgeland, as the Wedgehog matriarch, and instigator of wedgehog adventures!

Walter, Brie, Miko, and Mantari are in the Wedgeshop! We posted some 360 degree shots of them and one day when we get really fancy we'll turn them into animated 3D VIRTUAL WEDGES. It'll be like they're from the future, or at least, some 80s version of the future where everything involved 3D goggles. Memories!

Also, taking pictures is hard! Or was hard, at least, until we made THE MOST AWESOME LIGHTBOX EVER. Lightboxes are things you shove stuff inside of to take pictures in a controlled glare-free-ish environment.

OK, HOW TO MAKE A LIGHTBOX

Procure things! A cardboard box, big enough to put your photographables in with some leftover space. A piece of bristol board, white. Tracing paper or some translucent white sheet/paper/etc. A few lamps or light sources. Tape.
Cut holes in the front, left and right sides, and top of the box. Make them squarish. Leave two inches or so along the edges so your box retains it's boxy strength.
Cover all of the holes you just cut with tracing paper, or cut pieces of thin white sheets. Tape them down.
Cut the bristol board to be the inner width of your box. Place it inside the lightbox so that it covers the back, uncut side of the box and curves down along the bottom of the box. The idea is to eliminate any corners/possibilities of shadows along the bottom of the inside of your lightbox.
Shine your lamps through your tracing paper/sheet windows from the top/bottom/sides as necessary.
Take pictures of stuff, glare free!

So the next time someone with a fancy camera with 7 lenses and a panorama SLR gigapixel floodlight condensertron gets all camera-snobby, show them your cardboard box! It really worked out fantastically for us.

Magnets are awesome.

Walter wants you to know that he has them in his guitar and gets very excited about how they convert sound to electricity, and how there are very strong ones in computer parts if you smash them apart and look very hard, and how you can make a magnet by wrapping a wire around a nail, and a bunch of other things that seem to be very exciting to him.

You can buy Wedges magnets in the wedges Etsy shop! They're just like the pins except you can't accidentally stab yourself with them. And they're not wimpy can't-stick-the-phone-bill-to-the-fridge magnets either. There was rigorous quality assurance testing involved (we stuck the phone bill to the fridge).

Woo! Wedges website, online! Walter, Brie, Mantari and Miko are finally out for the world to see. We're really happy with the website so far, and are continuing to hack away at it, DIY-style.

The plush versions have turned out ridiculously well and we are hard at work on getting heaping mounds of wedge product ready for the masses (that's you!).
